Sam Neill, who died Monday at 78, is best remembered by many fans for one role. He played paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. The 1993 film, directed by Steven Spielberg, turned him into one of the most recognised faces in Hollywood.

He was not Spielberg’s first choice

Spielberg wanted Harrison Ford for the part. Ford had already worked with Spielberg on the Indiana Jones films. Ford received a copy of the script but turned down the role. Spielberg later said Ford felt it did not suit him at that stage of his career.

The role was then offered to Tim Robbins and William Hurt. Both declined. Richard Dreyfuss and Kurt Russell were also considered, but Spielberg saw them as too costly for the production.

Sam Neill had been one of Spielberg’s early options from the start, but he was busy filming Family Pictures when the process began.

Neill was cast only a few weeks before filming began. The production schedule was adjusted to fit around him.

Building the character

In the film, Alan Grant is a skilled paleontologist invited to Jurassic Park to evaluate its safety. Author Michael Crichton based the character on real paleontologist Jack Horner, who worked as a technical advisor on the film. Spielberg gave Grant a dislike of children at the start of the story, which changes as the plot moves forward.

Grant’s relationship with Dr. Ellie Sattler, played by Laura Dern, became one of the film’s emotional threads. Sattler wants to start a family. Grant is reluctant. That tension runs through the story alongside the danger posed by the dinosaurs.

The accent question

Neill spent weeks preparing an American accent for the role. Spielberg later told him to drop it and use his natural voice instead. A few days after that, Spielberg asked him to find something in between his own New Zealand accent and a general American one. Neill has spoken about this shift in later interviews, calling it a difficult adjustment to make partway through filming.

A film that became a cultural landmark

Jurassic Park was based on Crichton’s 1990 novel of the same name. It grossed more than US$900mil worldwide during its original theatrical run. The film became one of the highest-grossing releases of its era and reshaped what audiences expected from visual effects in cinema.

Neill starred alongside Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough. The ensemble cast became closely tied to the identity of the franchise. Neill later said in his memoir that he owed a great deal to Spielberg and the people involved in the film, though he did not feel the role changed the course of his career in a major way.

Return to the role

Neill reprised Dr. Alan Grant in 2001 for Jurassic Park III. He returned again in 2022 for Jurassic World Dominion, alongside Dern and Goldblum, more than two decades after the original film. The trio’s return brought back one of the most familiar pairings in the franchise’s history. – The Statesman/ANN
