Hong Kong actress Jessica Hsuan recently appeared on a radio programme to discuss her latest film, Back To The Past, and reflect on her acting journey.
In the interview, the 55-year-old revealed her reasons for leaving TVB, saying: "The way the system operated then made me uncomfortable."
Hsuan, who joined the broadcaster in 1993, added that she used to believe one would be appreciated as long as they were skilled. However, the reality was far from it.
"You had to flatter and please people you didn't want to please (to be appreciated). I asked myself if I could do that, and the answer was 'no'," she explained.
The actress said relationships hinge on chemistry, and without it, things can become difficult.
"I left TVB because there were many internal changes at that time. Many people left, and some newcomers joined. I got along well with the old group.
"But when you reach a point where you can't click anymore, many problems arise. I value happiness, and I'll leave if I'm unhappy," she said.
Hsuan – known for her roles in dramas like A Step Into The Past, Detective Investigation Files IV and more – switched from a full-time contract to a per-series arrangement with TVB in 2006.
She left the broadcaster in 2012 but maintained good relations with her former agency.
