More than 28 years after her death in the French capital, Princess Diana reappeared on Thursday at Paris' Grévin Museum as a life-size wax figure dressed in one of her most famous outfits.

The "People's Princess" is depicted in the black, off-the-shoulder cocktail dress that became known as the "revenge dress," complete with the small handbag, high heels and pearl necklace she wore at the time.

Diana chose the ensemble for a June 1994 fundraising dinner in London. A day earlier, in a widely watched television interview, Prince Charles had admitted to adultery - turning the dress into a defining moment of royal rebellion.

"With its colour, daring cut and plunging neckline, the 'revenge dress' defied royal protocol," the popular wax museum, founded in 1882, said in a statement. "It became a symbol of newfound freedom."

Grévin added that Diana remains a global pop-culture icon, celebrated for her style, compassion and independence.

She died in Paris on August 31, 1997, at age 36, after the car she was travelling in with her partner, Dodi Fayed, crashed into a pillar in a tunnel during a pursuit by paparazzi. Her death prompted an outpouring of grief in Britain and around the world.

At the Grévin, Museum Diana will be featured alongside a slew of past and present luminaries, including Marie-Antoinette, Beyoncé, Elton John, Albert Einstein and Nelson Mandela. – dpa
