When it comes to Hari Raya, we all get hyped about finding the perfect outfit with the matching colours, fabrics and glam, so we can slay all day.
But this time, it’s not even Hari Raya season yet and Malaysians are buzzing about one particular outfit.
The reason? A surprising fashion moment that feels both high-end and close to home.
Singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams turned heads with her performance look, blending Chanel couture elegance with a touch of baju kurung Kedah flair.
When Gracie Abrams accidentally went Raya-core
Here's what went down. Chanel’s official cover star, Abrams, took the stage at Vogue World: Hollywood, performing a medley of Carole King’s 1971 classic I Feel the Earth Move and her own song That’s So True from her 2024 album The Secret Of Us.
Vogue Spain summed it up perfectly on Instagram: "Gracie Abrams, our @chanelofficial cover star, performed tonight on #VogueWorld. And yes, she did it with one of Matthieu Blazy’s new designs for #VogueNoviembre."
The dress? A floral-embellished burgundy set from Chanel’s Spring 2026 collection which just so happened to mark Matthieu Blazy’s debut as Chanel’s new artistic director.
The collection was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week in October 2025 and this look, in particular, is shaping up to be the unofficial fashion moment of the season especially in Malaysia.
The reason Malaysians are losing it? The dress looks exactly like a modern baju kurung, the traditional outfit worn during the Hari Raya celebration.
The comments section was instantly flooded with Malaysian humour.
"The Kedah-style baju kurung has gone global," notniss_wrote.
"Performing at a Raya open house," another joked, imagining Gracie turning up to sing at a neighbourhood celebration and one fan absolutely nailed it with, "Next Raya, there’s going to be a collection called the Gracie baju kurung."
Fashion meets cultural crossover
What’s funny is that this wasn’t intentional, yet it says so much about how fashion constantly loops back into cultural aesthetics.
For Malaysians, seeing something that resembles our traditional wear on an international stage feels oddly satisfying.
