Free public screenings held in conjunction with the 34th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM34) have received an overwhelming response from local movie enthusiasts, with hundreds flocking to cinemas since the screenings began yesterday.
The screenings, which run from Oct 25 to 31 at GSC Mid Valley, offer audiences the chance to revisit some of Malaysia’s finest films competing in the country’s most prestigious film festival.
According to the Assistant Director of Industry Synergy at the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), Wan Noor Zazreena Wan Zaizodin, the initiative is among the key highlights of FFM34, aimed at encouraging Malaysians to appreciate local creative works while bringing Malaysian films closer to the public.
"Many people missed the chance to watch local films when they were first released in cinemas. So, in conjunction with FFM34, audiences can now enjoy a variety of films that showcase the talents of Malaysian filmmakers – from directors, actors, and scriptwriters to cinematographers and production crews behind the scenes,” she told Bernama after officiating the programme on behalf of Finas Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib at GSC Mid Valley.
She added that the screenings are open to everyone free of charge, and those interested can still reserve their seats through Finas’s official Facebook and Instagram pages or by scanning the provided QR code.
Wan Noor Zazreena said Finas remains committed to strengthening the country’s film ecosystem by organising programmes that help reignite public interest in local productions.
"This festival not only celebrates artistic achievements but also serves to build a closer bond between filmmakers and audiences.
"We want Malaysians to return to cinemas and rediscover the beauty and values embedded in local films. Cinema is not just about entertainment - it’s a reflection of our identity, culture, and national aspirations,” she said.
The FFM34 Awards Night is scheduled to take place on Nov 1.
In addition to the public screenings, Finas will also host a Film Aspirations Session from Oct 27 to 31 at 8pm at GSC Mid Valley, featuring film industry players, artistes and film students.
"The session will be held privately as a platform for sharing and discussion on the filmmaking process and the challenges faced by the local film industry,” she added.
