Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng, better known as Uncle Roger, married Miami-based lawyer Sabrina Ahmed in a three-day wedding celebration held in the historic town of Sintra, Portugal.

On Sept 14, Ng, 34, wrote on social media: “On July 19, 2025, I married my best friend @sabriiines.”

Their engagement was announced in December 2024. In March, Ng posted on social media engagement photos taken in Taipei markets, which were published in Vogue Taiwan.

The multicultural wedding in Portugal was featured in the American edition of fashion magazine Vogue in an article published on Sept 11.

The couple first met in 2022. She was then corporate counsel for a luxury resort developer in Miami, and attended Ng’s comedy show at one of its properties. A friend had dismissed the performer, describing him as “a guy who jokes about rice”, but she found herself drawn to his humour and charm, according to Vogue.

Ng went viral in 2020 for critiquing a BBC Food video on cooking egg fried rice using the persona of Uncle Roger, a middle-aged Asian man with an exaggerated Cantonese accent who uses catchphrases such as “haiyaa” and “fuiyoh”.

Ahmed later joined a dating app, where Ng appeared as one of her first matches. The comedian, smitten by her elegance, offered to fly her to Boston for their first meeting. By coincidence, their flights landed simultaneously at Boston’s Terminal 3.

“Everything felt destined and easy,” she said.

Following that meeting, sparks flew, according to Vogue. By March 2023, Ng realised he wanted to make it permanent, so the couple moved to London together. In April 2024, during a trip to Tokyo during cherry blossom season, he proposed on one knee at Inokashira Park.

In July, the couple celebrated their wedding in Portugal. They chose the location for its multicultural architecture that reflected their backgrounds, as the buildings combine Chinese, Islamic and Indian influences.

The three-day celebration saw the couple change into Western, Indian and Chinese attire. It was attended by 70 friends and family members, and guests included American comedian Jimmy O. Yang.

“Marrying Sabrina is the greatest achievement of my life,” Ng said. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
