Singer Yazmin Aziz, 23, is no stranger to competition, having taken part in numerous contests since she was young and even winning on international stages.

Now, the Malaysian-Filipino talent is in Kazakhstan as the only South-East Asian contestant in Silk Way Star, a new international vocal competition featuring contestants from 12 countries including China, South Korea and Kazakhstan.

“It’s such an honour every single time I represent Malaysia but this moment feels even more meaningful because I also carry my South-East Asian roots with me,” she said of her participation.

“I’m proud to be Malaysian and part Filipino, and that gives me a unique chance to share the diversity of not only Malaysia but also our region.”

Showing diversity has always been important to Yazmin as she says music can unite cultures.

One way she's demonstrated this is by performing in multiple languages. Back in May, Yazmin performed in Tagalog and Burmese at the gala night of the 46th Asean Summit held in Kuala Lumpur.

Similarly, at Silk Way Star, she will sing in at least four languages throughout the competition.

Always prioritising experience first, the Lihatlah singer sees the event as more than just a contest – she says it’s about breaking barriers and showing the richness of South-East Asian talent.

“Personally, it makes me proud to celebrate where I come from, and professionally, it pushes me to show that South-East Asian artistes can stand confidently on a global stage while staying true to our identity.”

Preparing for the competition – which includes performances, shows and a gala concert – Yazmin has been fine-tuning her song arrangements to showcase versatility across different genres.

“Since it’s also a reality-based competition, I’ve stayed true to myself. I believe my personal story and experiences play an important role too.

“Music is about connection, and sharing those real moments allows people to relate to me beyond just the performance.”

Beyond the stage, Yazmin hopes her journey will open doors for other Malaysian and South-East Asian artistes.

“By representing Malaysia and being the only South-East Asian contestant here, I hope to prove that our region has voices and stories worth sharing on international stages.

“If my journey inspires other artistes back home to believe they too belong on platforms like this, then I’ve done something meaningful.”
