The song Serumpun, which carries a theme of unity and togetherness in celebrating Aidilfitri, has become a social media sensation, particularly through the #SerumpunChallenge on TikTok.

The song, penned and performed by Shamimi Amalina, better known as Mimi Fly, has received an overwhelming response, with thousands of social media users creating creative videos, including group dance performances with family and friends.

Adding to the excitement, a group of Indian women took the initiative to recreate the Serumpun music video, mirroring the original concept, as a show of support for the song’s powerful message of unity.

Their spokesperson, local actress Pashini Sivakumar said the decision to reproduce the video was driven by their admiration for the song’s melody and choreography, as well as their appreciation for Mimi Fly’s courage in responding to feedback from netizens, by deleting and re-recording the original video.

"We believe Mimi Fly’s decision was bold, as not all artists are willing to accept criticism and take such action. So, we felt it was only right to support the song by recreating the video,” she said.

"After all, this song is truly amazing and incredibly catchy. The lyrics are also meaningful, especially phrases like ‘serai serumpun’ and ‘sirih tersusun’, which symbolise unity and togetherness,” she said.

Blending traditional and modern musical elements, Serumpun delivers a vibrant melody with a profound message of unity, joy, and the cherished warmth of Aidilfitri.

Pashini shared that the filming process took just one day, involving a team of 10, including a director, videographer, dancers and a stylist, at Latar Salam Salaman Homestay in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor.

According to her, the music video, directed by Shan De Souza, was produced on a budget of RM2,000, covering location rental, equipment, props, and meals for the production team.

"One of the main challenges was sourcing fabrics that matched the original costumes, as well as props like rattan trays. Since we had to complete the production quickly, the costumes weren’t sewn but simply folded and pinned in place,” she explained.

"In addition, mimicking the precise hand movements and gestures from the original video was quite challenging. "It required intensive practice to ensure uniformity, and we had to repeatedly watch the original clip to perfect the resemblance,” she said.

As of now, the recreated music video has amassed over three million views and nearly 300,000 likes, since being uploaded on TikTok on March 28. It has also caught the attention of Mimi Fly herself.

"We were thrilled when Mimi Fly acknowledged our efforts and responded positively. It’s truly an honour for us.

"We never expected such an overwhelming response, and the diverse comments from people of different backgrounds show that unity is something we naturally embrace. "That is what we should celebrate, rather than focusing on things that divide us,” said Pashini, who will soon be appearing in the Malay telefilm titled Kari Kumari. – Bernama
