A local radio station has landed itself in hot water after its announcers defended South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun amid allegations of his involvement in underage dating.
Kim, 37, has faced intense scrutiny since March 10, when a YouTube channel accused him of dating late actress Kim Sae-ron while she was still a minor.
Kim Soo-hyun's agency Gold Medalist confirmed that the two were in a relationship for a year but insisted that Sae-ron was of legal age at the time.
Despite this, many netizens remain doubtful of the agency’s claim.
According to China Press, three hosts from Eight FM recently posted a video discussing Kim's controversy on their morning show, defending him and saying he wasn't at fault.
One of the announcers also added: "There are many couples with large age gaps in the industry. I don't understand why there's no issue when minors date other minors."
The video, which was posted on the station's social media, was then deleted.
The announcers' comments didn't sit well with netizens, who immediately criticised the station. Some also slammed the station for deleting the video without an explanation or apology.
"You can't just quietly delete the video without an apology. What's out is out," said one netizen.
Another added: "Minors aren't mature enough (to know about dating) while adults already have a certain level of understanding to distinguish between right and wrong."
On March 16, Eight FM issued an apology on social media, stressing that its announcers' opinions don't reflect the station's official stance or values.
It also promised to take necessary measures to ensure its programming aligns with professional standards and ethics.
"We sincerely apologise for any discomfort or dissatisfaction caused. We appreciate our audiences' attention and feedback," it wrote.
The three hosts also uploaded an apology video on March 17, in which they expressed regret and promised to be more mindful of their words and actions moving forward.
"As a radio host, I should be more careful with my words and actions. I should be professional, neutral and respectful.
"I thank everyone for their criticisms and will accept all feedback. I'll work harder to be a better media practitioner, following journalistic ethics," said one of the announcers.
