Is Chinese actress Vicki Zhao planning a comeback?

Zhao, who has not been active on social media in the last three years, has posted for the second time in four days.

On March 12, she turned 49 and shared a photo of herself and two photos of the sun on Chinese social media platform Weibo later that day.

“May all sentient beings be enlightened,” she wrote in English, including the emojis of a red heart, a globe and two hands placed together.

She also reacted to several fans who wished her happy birthday in her post, either thanking them or replying with the red heart emoji.

Zhao’s outfit in the photo was similar to the one she wore in a group photo taken recently with her friends at a cafe in China’s Yunnan province.

The actress has been living there for the last few months, but she was spotted at Beijing Daxing International Airport by fans on March 11. Her latest IP location on Weibo also states that she is back in the Chinese capital.

Zhao’s photo on March 12 is believed to be the first she has shared of herself on social media since she was blacklisted by the Chinese authorities in August 2021 for undisclosed reasons.

Since then, the star – whose iconic shows include period dramas My Fair Princess (1998 to 1999) and fantasy film Painted Skin (2008) – had posted only occasionally on Instagram, without showing herself in the photos. Her Weibo account was back to normality in March 2024.

In an earlier post on Weibo on the night of March 8, Zhao posted a photo of a moon with the caption: “The moon tonight... The moon at that time.”

She was referencing the song The Moon At That Time (1999) by her good friend, Hong Kong singer Faye Wong.

Zhao had announced on Weibo on Dec 28 that she had divorced her businessman husband Huang Youlong several years ago. They have a daughter who turns 15 in April. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
