Hong Kong actor Liu Kai Chi passed away on March 28, 2021, at the age of 66 from stomach cancer.

More than a year after his death, Liu’s wife – former TVB actress Barbara Chan Man Yee – opened up about his passing and how it all happened very suddenly and quickly.

Chan, 62, recently appeared on the TV programme Through The Darkest Valley, along with her younger son Liu Man San, where she revealed that her husband had passed away less than a month after he was diagnosed with cancer.

As reported by a news portal, Chan said on the programme that Liu did not smoke or drink alcohol. He also led a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly and going on hikes.

However, when Liu went to the doctors after experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort, it was discovered he had advanced stomach cancer that had already spread to his liver.

Even more shocking, he was informed he only had about a month to live.

“Just imagine ... this healthy person who could run up to the peak of a mountain only three weeks ago was told he only had one month left to live,” Chan recalled sadly, adding that Liu was understandably shocked and depressed after receiving the bad news.

Nonetheless, Liu decided to get treatment to fight the cancer and had even told Chan that he wanted to live to see his two sons get married.

The couple had three sons, but their youngest died at the age of five in 2006 after a three-year battle with leukemia.

According to Chan, the biggest change she observed about Liu in his final days was, “he became very talkative every day”.

In one of the obituaries written by a HK news portal after his death last year, it stated that the devout Christian did not fear death.

Liu was quoted: “There are always flaws in life. Don’t be afraid to face suffering. After experiencing it, life is then complete. Even if there is suffering, God must have his good intentions. I’m not afraid of a short life. Even if I die tomorrow, I don’t mind. Death is painful, but I am not afraid.”

He was famous for playing “everyman” supporting roles and had starred in over 90 dramas and 70 movies in a 40-year career. He’d won the Hong Kong Film Awards’ best supporting actor trophy twice – for the films Cageman and Beast Stalker.

In 2015, Liu appeared in the Malaysian Chinese film Love Endures, portraying a mentally challenged man named Jiang Shun.
