Zhang's eldest son Yinan, 20, has already won awards for his film project when he was a teenager.
When he was 17, Yinan won the Best Director, Best Music Score and Best In Show awards at the Shanghai Student Film Festival for a short film he and his friends worked on.
Now, Zhang's younger son, Yiding is making headlines. It's reported that he has been accepted into SEVEN universities, including the prestigious Yale in the United States.
Zhang's wife Chen Ting wrote on Weibo: "Our second brother who just turned 18 this year received admission letters from seven universities, including Yale.
"Of those seven, he ranked within the Top 20 for two of them, and was offered two scholarships (including a President’s Music Scholarship).
"Our son gave his dad the best birthday present."
Zhang, who directed Raise The Red Lantern and House Of Flying Daggers, celebrated his 72nd birthday on April 2.
He and Chen have another child, 15-year-old daughter Yijiao.
Zhang also has a daughter from his first marriage, 38-year-old Zhang Mo who works as a film director too.
