Where to watch 2022 Oscar Best Picture nominated films

On Feb 8, the 94th Academy Awards nominations were announced with Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog leading the pack with 12 nods, including one for Best Picture.

Here’s a summary of the 10 nominees for Best Picture and where to catch them before the Oscars are handed out on March 27.

The Power Of The Dog

Benedict Cumberbatch leads the cast in this psychological drama where he plays ranch owner Phil Burbank who dislikes his brother’s new wife, Rose. However, he is taken by her teenage son.

Also starring real-life husband and wife, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst, both of whom are nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. (Netflix)

West Side Story

Revered auteur Steven Spielberg adapts the popular 1957 musical into this delightful movie that tells the story of two rival gangs (the Jets and the Sharks) and a forbidden romance – of Tony and Maria. (Available on Disney+ Hotstar from March 3.)

Nightmare Alley

Bradley Cooper plays Stanton Carlisle, a con artist who has possibly met his match in Lilith Ritter, a mysterious psychiatrist, portrayed by Cate Blanchett. He seeks her help to con a tycoon but can Lilith be trusted?

Can director Guillermo Del Toro, who took home the Best Picture Oscar in 2018 for The Shape Of Water, score another statuette? (Now showing at selected cinemas nationwide; available on Disney+ Hotstar from March 27.)

King Richard

A biopic on Richard Williams, the man responsible for the success of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams.

Will Smith, who has portrayed real-life figures (Muhammad Ali in 2001’s Ali; Chris Gardner in 2006’s The Pursuit Of Happyness), takes on the role of Richard, father of Venus and Serena.

Smith is also nominated for Best Actor for King Richard. He was previously nominated in this category for both Ali and The Pursuit Of Happyness but did not win. Will this third time be the one? (Now showing at selected cinemas nationwide.)

Don’t Look Up

A comet, 10km in size, is about to crash into Earth but no one seems to be taking this news seriously much to the dismay and frustrations of two astronomers.

The A-list cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet and Ariana Grande. The film is nominated for four awards. (Netflix)

Coda

Coda stands for “Child Of Deaf Adults”. Nineteen-year-old actress Emilia Jones plays Ruby, the only hearing person in her deaf family. She finds herself torn between wanting to pursue her dreams of singing and her fear of abandoning her parents.

Marlee Matlin, the only deaf performer to have ever won an Oscar – for her role in the 1986 drama Children Of A Lesser God – co-stars. The movie is nominated for three Oscars. (Apple TV+)

Dune

Timothee Chalamet stars in yet another Best Picture nominee. In this one – based on the novel by Frank Herbert – Chalamet is Paul Atreides, a gifted man who travels to the dangerous planet Arrakis to ensure the future of his family, and that his people are protected.

This first of this planned two-part film also co-stars Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and Zendaya. (HBO Go)

Drive My Car

Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a renowned stage actor, receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima.

There, he is assigned a chauffeur, Misaki (Toko Miura), whom he develops a special bond.

While preparing for the production, Yusuke has to face the painful truth that has been plaguing him since the death of his wife.

This Japanese movie is also in the running for Best International Feature Film. Can it be this year’s Parasite? (Coming soon to Mubi.)


Licorice Pizza (coming-of-age drama set in the 1970s) and Belfast (drama on working class family in the late 1960s in Northern Ireland directed by Kenneth Branagh) are currently not available in Malaysia.
