Troye Sivan might be popularly known as a singer these days but he actually started his showbiz career in musical theatre at age 12. His foray into singing began when the South Africa-born Australian, like most young artistes his age, started posting videos and vlogs on YouTube in 2012.

After getting noticed for his talent, he secured a record deal and released an EP, TRXYE in 2014 which reached No.5 on Billboard 200 and No.1 on iTunes in 55 countries. Not bad for the then 19-year-old Sivan.

Since then, he has released two studio albums and several EPs. He even co-wrote a song for BTS titled Louder Than Bombs for the K-pop group’s Map Of The Soul: 7 album.

The now 26-year-old singer’s latest single is titled Angel Baby and was released on Sept 9, to coincide with his 2021 MTV Video Music Awards debut performance.

In a recent interview, Sivan talks about the inspiration behind his new single.

“It’s the idea of almost giving up on finding someone and then on a rainy night (the person) kinda shows up,” he said in the video call from Los Angeles, California in the United States. Sivan, who’s single, joked that he too is waiting for something like that to happen to him.

He added that making the track allowed him to fantasise the scenario and also reminded him how beautiful the idea of love was.

Sivan said that melody of Angel Baby was also inspired by pop hits from the 1980s, as they were songs he listened to when he was younger.

When asked how much he has changed since his debut, Sivan explained: “When I first started, I would have to throw a million things at the wall to see what would stick. Now I feel like I just know how to get from point A to point B easier.”

The Youth singer has also had a few high profile acting gigs, starring in films such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009.

He shared that acting and music actually have a lot in common.

“It’s like, as a songwriter your job is to bring up real emotions that maybe you’re not necessarily feeling in that moment. It’s about recalling feelings and communicating them to tell a story, and that’s exactly what acting is as well.”

However, he added that he found acting a tad scarier because of his lack of experience in the field.

He was last seen in the 2018 drama, Boy Erased opposite fellow Aussie star, Nicole Kidman.

Sivan recently made headlines when he attended the Met Gala in a black dress. “I thought it was cool but when I put it on, I was like, ‘this is so crazy’,” he said about his choice to wear the slinky number which he accessorised with a Cartier necklace and a leather armband.

He continued: “Clothes, truly to me, are not gendered and (Met Gala) was one of those moments when I realised how true that is.”

He also touched on his debut performance at the VMAs last month where he performed Angel Baby. Sivan disclosed that he almost cried at the event and had to take a moment to compose himself.

“It’s weird because I have dreamt about doing this my whole life and all of it came true,” he said.
