Elton John took to Instagram on Wednesday (Sept 1) to announce that he will be releasing an album filled with surprising collaborations with some of the biggest artistes in the music industry.
The album consisting of 16 songs is rightfully named The Lockdown Sessions as it was recorded during, well, the lockdown. John, 74, expressed that he had gone into the studio with no expectations and came up with a list of people he had desired to work with. This range from rappers such as Young Thug and Nicki Minaj – which John considers “very unusual" – to many of his personal heroes like Brandi Carlile, Eddie Vedder and Stevie Nicks.
“Never in a million years did I think this was gonna be a year where I put an album out,” John said referencing the pandemic and lockdown.
He went on to explain that each song varies from the genres his fans would expect such as rock and soul; he ventures into unfamiliar territories such as country and dance. "I've ended with a selection of really interesting and diverse stuff that was completely different to anything I'm known for, stuff that took me out of my comfort zone...," he added.
In a separate Instagram post, John says that this experience felt familiar to him, as it reminded him of his time as a session musician when he started his career. “I’d come full circle: I was a session musician again. And it was still a blast,” he noted.
One of the tracks on his album, Cold Heart (PNAU Remix) has already been released as a single featuring British pop star Dua Lipa.
The Lockdown Sessions will be released on Oct 22.
