Once upon a time, in show business, your career is as dead as the door nail the minute you hit 50. You no longer get the lead (or even second lead) roles, companies aren’t looking for you to endorse their products and magazines won’t consider putting you on their covers.
But in the past decade or so, things have changed for the better in the industry that’s so blatant when it comes to ageism.
Celebs in their 50s today are not like those in the yesteryears. Leading the pack is superstar Jennifer Lopez who defies industry stereotype as well as gravity with her red-hot career (acting, music, fashion, beauty) and smoking hot body.
Now, a group of celebrities in their 50s are getting the limelight, or even a second chance at their career, thanks to their dedication and discipline in preserving themselves.
We take a look at three celebrities who are constantly inspiring us with their youthful appearance. We find out what makes them tick, the sacrifices they have to make in search of the fountain of youth and the tricks we can learn from these pros.
Aaron Kwok is one celebrity who is the envy of many for his flawless skin and sculpted physique.
The actor, who turns 55 on Oct 26, says he has been taking care of his skin from a young age, to which he attributes his youthful looks now.
“I started to take care of my skin from way back in 1995. That’s 24 years of persistence. Taking care of the skin is not just what women do; men should do it, too, ” the actor- singer said in an interview in Singapore last year.
For Kwok, taking care of himself is a job he takes seriously as his fans expect nothing less from him.
“As a singer, I have to ensure that I am always presenting the best version of myself to the audience, especially during concert season, ” says Kwok who admits to being “vain”.
As for keeping his body in tip-top shape, Kwok believes in working out daily.
“As we age, fitness levels may differ but consistent exercise helps combat ageing. That’s how I keep looking youthful, ” he explains.
Kwok adds that he weighs himself on a daily basis to ensure consistency.
“I ensure that I’m always between 62kg and 64kg. If I go above that, I know that my body is telling me that something is wrong, ” he says to 8 Days magazine.
The Hong Kong artiste, who is married to model Moka Fang, doesn’t stop himself from indulging in good food. However, he balances it with daily gym sessions.
“I don’t control what I eat but I counter this indulgence with what I call ‘punishment exercise’ which means I exercise for at least an hour every day.”
Apart from keeping physically fit, Kwok believes in being mentally fit as well. To do that, the father of two says it is important to surround himself with like-minded people.
“The people you surround with make an impact on who you are. I believe in the importance of having a positive mindset. Especially at this time, it doesn’t do any good to keep dwelling on the negative, ” he says.
Imagine starting an Instagram account to showcase your work as a photographer, only to be noticed for your good genes instead.
That was what happened to Chuando Tan in 2017 when photos of the Singaporean photographer went viral globally for his youthful demeanour. The then 50-year-old could have easily passed off as a 30-year-old.
He tells The Straits Times: “I started an Instagram account because some friends told me that clients these days want to know how big a social media following a photographer has. In order to pepper my account, I posted several photos of myself to share my thoughts in captions.”
Not only did netizens marvel at Tan’s flawless face but also his excellent physique.
His secret? Avoid showering late at night or early in the morning and work out 90 minutes at least four times a week.
Also, no late nights. “Trust me, going to bed early is worth it. Having had enough sleep, you’ll be able to do more things during the day rather than if you work at night, ” the 54-year-old revealed in an interview in 2017.
Tan, who stands at 1.85m, also avoids caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol. He believes his healthy outlook is based on 70% diet and 30% exercise.
Needless to say, the foods he consumes are clean, such as chicken with rice, grilled vegetables, fish soup and salad.
All the attention has given him an opportunity to pursue another artistic venture – acting.
Tan has completed shooting a Mandarin thriller titled Precious Is The Night, due for release at the end of the year. In it, he plays a doctor in his 30s. How fitting.

When it comes to her health and beauty regime, there are two things that will never be enough for Lopez – water and sleep.
According to the Let’s Get Loud hitmaker, she drinks round the clock when she’s awake.
“For me, it feels good. It’s mostly what I drink all the time. I don’t count (how many glasses) I drink, but I drink it all day, ” she tells Dr Oz in an interview. She doesn’t touch alcohol, caffeine or cigarettes. “That really wrecks your skin as you get older, ” she tells Hollywood Life.
Getting enough hours of sleep is non-negotiable for her. “The number one tip is to always get enough sleep. I can’t stress this enough. Ideally, I would love to get nine or 10 hours of sleep, but either way, I always make sure I get at least eight, ” she says to InStyle.

Lopez tells Hello: “I really believe that when you take care of yourself and work to stay healthy, you’re better able to take care of those you love. So working out is definitely a priority for me.”
The artiste does a variety of workouts to keep things fresh and fun. From core workout and weight training to pole dancing and cardio, Lopez does it all.
Trainer David Kirsch divulges to People about his famous client: “She’s genetically blessed, she’s physically gifted with an incredible amount of physical energy, but also this beautiful amount of mental and emotional energy. She’s very connected to her body, and she’s got crazy discipline.”
