Hsu, pictured in a screenshot from 'After Becoming A Mother', "stopped breathing" after giving birth to her second child.

Actress Barbie Hsu revealed she had a near-death experience when giving birth to her second child, Wang Hsi-lin, in 2016.

The 43-year-old, who shot to fame after starring in the 2001 Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden, opened up about the harrowing moment during the TV programme, After Becoming A Mother.

“As soon as I gave birth to my son, I stopped breathing and I had to be sent to the Intensive Care Unit," she revealed (translation by 8 Days).

Her doctors couldn't determine the cause of her condition. Hsu then slipped into a semi-conscious state, where she remembers repeatedly asking for her eldest child Wang Hsi-yueh, who was two at the time.

Hsu's mum later brought Hsi-yueh to her. With Hsu's daughter by her side, something miraculous happened:

“I believe it was Hsi-Yueh who pulled me away from death’s door. I will forever remember that moment when she was looking into my eyes and listening to me tell her to take good care of her little brother because at that time, I wasn’t sure if I would survive.”

Hsu eventually made a full recovery. Her son Hsi-lin was also in good health.

The actress, who is married to Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, later got pregnant with their third child in 2018.

Unfortunately, she had to terminate the pregnancy after doctors couldn't detect her baby's heartbeat.
