Publika Jazz Festival, Malaysia’s largest free jazz festival, which took place recently, showcased many genres of jazz from different eras. The two-day event, conducted on the last Friday and Saturday of August, attracted more than 8,000 visitors this year.

Held annually to celebrate the anniversary of Publika Shopping Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, the jazz festival is already in its sixth edition and has just hosted 120 musicians from all over the world at this year’s mega event.

This year’s highlights included NewSound, Fazz, Barry Likumahuwa, Shock and Awe!, Muhammad Nazrin, Travis Tan Experiment, Diandra Arjunaidi, New Village Music Lab featuring Rozz, Ryot Jones, Havana Jazz Tumbao, Carpio Brothers, Dani, Bro’s and Phunkmob.

“The Publika Jazz Festival provides a platform to nurture musical talents and continues the tradition of showcasing both local and international performances to develop our vibrant jazz music industry,” says UEM Sunrise Berhad managing director and CEO Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib.

Publika Shopping Gallery is a creative retail subsidiary of UEM Sunrise Berhad. As a property and lifestyle developer, UEM Sunrise Berhad is also focusing on placemaking initiatives which help in establishing communities with an emphasis on art and cultural activities.

“As part of our community building initiative, we aim to continue providing a family-friendly environment for our visitors.

“Besides the annual Publika Jazz Festival, Publika also hosts international events like the Kuala Lumpur International Comedy Festival, the monthly Fuyoh Art Bazaar, the French celebration Fete de la Musique Festival, the Japanese traditional Bon Odori, as well as the Cooler Lumpur Festival (comprising a wide variety of creative workshops, screenings, performances, exhibitions, panel discussions and boot camps),” continues Anwar, adding that Publika’s spaces are designed to be versatile to accommodate a diverse mix of activities including art exhibitions, fashion shows, music gigs, corporate events, community bazaars, lectures, seminars and workshops.

Meanwhile, Publika Jazz Festival has, over the years, grown into a major event spreading over four different indoor and outdoor venues within Publika, namely The Square, Black Box, The Bee and The Social.

Aside from Publika, UEM Sunrise is also working on creative placemaking activities at its other developments including Iskandar Puteri (in Johor) as well as its brand new lifestyle destination Solaris Parq, which connects to Publika at Solaris Dutamas in KL.
