Classic Malay dishes and more

CELEBRATE kinship and togetherness this Ramadan over the value-for-money Iftar Buffet Dinner served at Cititel Penang’s Main Street Cafe.

Available every Friday and Saturday until May 8, it features delightful Malay dishes, street food favourites and fusion items.

At just RM58 for adults, RM29 for children aged below 12 and RM48 for senior citizens above 55, the Ramadan buffet is one of the most affordable spreads in town.

Sous chef John Khoo said four menus are on rotation with variations among the hot dishes so guests have something new to try on each visit.

However, several signature items are the mainstays.

“One of them is our Ayam Gepuk Lesung. Originating from Indonesia, the dish features crispy yet succulent fried chicken with rice and vegetables on the side.

“But what makes it special is the sambal, ” he shared.

Pounded by hand, the fiery chilli paste is sure to resonate with local tastebuds.

Lather on as much as your spice tolerance will allow, then temper it a little with a dollop of sweet sambal kicap.

Lamb Kuzi with Briyani Rice, Sup Gearbox and Chicken or Beef Satay are also crowd favourites.

Each session also features around a dozen main dishes.

Possibilities include Daging Masak Hitam, Udang Masak Sambal Tumis, Sotong Masak Kunyit, Ikan Masak Lemak Cili Api, Kari Ikan Bendi, Kari Nangka Muda, Kambing Masak Kurma, Ayam Rendang, Lala Masak Pedas and Bubur Lambuk Ayam.

Completing the savoury lineup are noodle items including Penang Assam Laksa, Hokkien Prawn Mee and Mee Rebus as well as assorted ulam, kerabu, acar, keropok and pasembur.

Desserts are a mix of local kuih and Western sweets.

Khoo said the Ayam Gepuk is also available for takeaways under the hotel’s ‘Tapao’ menu along with other items such as Nasi Lemak Bunga Telang with Rendang and Hainanese Chicken Chop.

Each set comes with iced lemon tea and prices range from RM6 to RM12.

These are available from 11am to 3pm on Friday and Saturday, and up to 6pm from Sunday to Thursday. Place orders at least 30 minutes before intended pick-up.
