WHERE SANCTUARY MEETS SUSTAINABILITY

For BRDB, sustainability and responsible development represent a long-term dedication that extends far beyond project completion.

MORE than just a place to stay, Eden Taman Duta is envisioned as a paradise to call home and a legacy to be cherished for generations to come.

Developed by BRDB Developments Sdn Bhd (BRDB), the residence brings to life its vision of enduring quality and responsible development to one of Kuala Lumpur’s most distinguished neighbourhoods.

For the developer, responsible development is not just to build homes; it is about creating places designed to stand the test of time.

“At BRDB, we see sustainability and responsible development as a long-term commitment that goes beyond the delivery of a property. It begins at the planning and design stage and extends throughout the development lifecycle – from construction and operations to maintenance and everyday living,” said BRDB deputy chief executive officer Yasmin Khan.

Well-timed development

For the legacy developer, which has more than six decades of experience, land represents more than an asset to be developed.

The vision for Eden Taman Duta has been years in the making. Originally slated for unveiling in 2024, the development was held back when the company determined that the timing was not yet right, opting instead to revisit and refine the plans to ensure they were befitting of the site.

“The land has been part of BRDB’s land bank since 1997, and it was held deliberately for the right purpose. The quality of the idea had to precede the timing of its execution. The question was not simply when to build, but what the site genuinely warranted,” Yasmin said.

For the developer, this meant considering what kind of homes would be worthy of the land, what quality of living environment they should offer and how the architecture could work in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

“The relationship between architecture and landscape was particularly important. Taman Duta has an established and mature landscape, and the architecture had to earn its place within that setting rather than assert itself against it.”

This influenced fundamental decisions around building placement, orientation, podium design, planting strategy and sightlines.

A prime example is the decision to embrace the site’s organic terrain through the construction of a continuous podium across the 4.96ha site rather than cutting into the land’s natural valley.

“While this required a more complex and capital-intensive approach, it allowed us to preserve more of the landscape, minimise disruption to the terrain and create a more cohesive environment above ground,” she said.

This measured approach lies at the heart of BRDB’s philosophy of responsible development, where commercial objectives are carefully balanced with environmental stewardship, social responsibility and the creation of long-term value.

Planning for the future

Drawing on its decades of experience, BRDB applies the lessons of past developments to anticipate evolving needs and expectations of its future residents.

“Each BRDB development builds upon the last – not through repetition, but through refinement. Our experience with developments such as One Menerung and Serai has reinforced the importance of proportion, privacy, intelligent spatial planning and a quality of space that feels considered rather than imposed.

“The intention was to create homes with the capacity to hold a life – not simply accommodate it, but provide the backdrop against which memories are made over many years,” she said.

The development, set to be completed in 2030, is a low-rise residential development featuring a total of 146 units of exclusive villas across eight towers that are designed for multigenerational living.

“Future-proofing does not mean chasing every new trend. It is about making thoughtful decisions that continue to make sense many years from now.

“Timeless architecture, enduring craftsmanship, intelligent spatial planning and sensitivity to place are principles that we believe will always remain relevant,” Yasmin added.

Eco-conscious design

For lasting resilience, sustainable design was woven into Eden Taman Duta from the earliest planning and design stages.

“At Eden, the environmental choices were considered not only in terms of their immediate benefits, but also in how they could contribute to the development’s long-term performance,” BRDB deputy chief executive officer Nazim Khan said.

The environmental measures incorporated into the development are intended to support more resource-efficient living over a longer term. These include high-performance glazing and roof installations to reduce heat gain, regenerative lifts, solar panels, water-efficient fittings, rainwater harvesting, LED lighting and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

To complement these eco-friendly infrastructure features, the project adopts the Concrete Usage Index to support more efficient concrete use, as well as the Green Plot Ratio approach, which considers the effectiveness of greenery in delivering environmental benefits.

The combined sustainability measures have culminated in the development earning the GreenRE Gold Certification (Provisional).

Proritising wellness

Beyond environmental stewardship, personal wellness serves as another core pillar in BRDB’s approach to responsible development.

“We considered how residents would actually use their homes and the wider development.

The focus was on creating an environment that supports comfort, privacy, wellness, recreation and connection with nature as part of daily life,” said Nazim.

The development’s wellness facilities include the Wellness Pavilion, swimming pools, yoga deck and active recreational spaces. These are complemented by outdoor areas that encourage residents to connect with the surrounding landscape.

The relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces was also considered carefully. For example, the gymnasium and children’s areas extend into outdoor spaces, while pocket doors and cross-ventilation allow parts of the clubhouse to open up to the surrounding environment.

“Ultimately, we believe the benefit is in how these elements come together to support everyday life – a home that is comfortable, functional, connected to nature and designed with the needs of its residents in mind,” he noted.

Resilience from within

One of the often-overlooked aspects of creating lasting homes is strong corporate governance.

BRDB’s focus on talent development ensures that the company continues to uphold its reputation while evolving with changing industry expectations, Yasmin noted.

This internal focus is critical in an industry that demands a range of expertise, spanning conceptualisation, design, project management, construction, facilities management and commercial decision-making.

To this end, the company prioritises cross-departmental collaboration to foster a shared responsibility for maintaining the high standards of the company.

“We believe it is important for our people to understand how these disciplines work together, as decisions made at one stage can have a lasting impact on the quality, functionality and sustainability of a development.

“This helps our teams look beyond their individual responsibilities and appreciate the wider implications of their decisions – whether in material selection, design efficiency, construction quality or the long-term maintenance of a property,” she said.

“For BRDB, a successful development should ultimately become part of the fabric of everyday life - a place where families grow, relationships are built, and communities take shape.”
