HLB, UPI in cross-border payment tie-up

HLB group managing director and chief executive officer Kevin Lam.

PETALING JAYA: Hong Leong Bank Bhd (HLB) has partnered UnionPay International (UPI) to expand cross-border payment connectivity, enabling its customers to make payments at more than 120 million merchants across China, as well as participating merchants in Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand.

The collaboration leverages UPI’s integrated network with Weixin Pay, allowing HLB customers to pay directly by scanning merchant QR codes through the HLB Connect app.

The feature complements HLB’s existing multi-currency capabilities under its Pay&Save Account, allowing customers to lock in favourable exchange rates while avoiding third-party apps and wallet top-ups.

HLB group managing director and chief executive officer Kevin Lam said the partnership would give customers greater confidence and convenience when making overseas payments.
