KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) to explore providing 4G and 5G in-building coverage at the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ) Complex in Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru.

The complex forms part of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is expected to carry about 40,000 passengers daily upon opening.

In a joint statement, the parties said the collaboration would focus on establishing the commercial, technical and operational framework for mobile connectivity within the complex.

Under the proposed arrangement, U Mobile would connect its network to MRT Corp's existing in-building coverage infrastructure to extend 4G and 5G services throughout the facility.

The implementation is subject to a definitive agreement, technical requirements and regulatory approvals.

The proposed network coverage is expected to support commuters, visitors and about 600 government agency personnel based at the complex.

The parties will also explore potential 5G and artificial intelligence applications to support building operations and improve operational efficiency.

U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck said the collaboration aimed to provide mobile connectivity for passengers and government personnel at the cross-border transport hub.

“Through this collaboration with MRT Corp, we aim to extend U Mobile’s 4G and 5G network coverage throughout the ICQC, helping government agency personnel, commuters and visitors stay connected at this important cross border gateways.

“This initiative reflects our continued commitment to extending quality digital connectivity across strategic public infrastructure and high-traffic locations, supporting Malaysia's digital and economic growth,” he said.

MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said reliable mobile connectivity was an important component of passenger services, particularly at a major cross-border gateway.

U Mobile currently provides 5G in-building coverage at more than 250 sites nationwide.
