Sime Darby Property Launches Nationwide University Hackathon

KUALA LUMPUR: Sime Darby Property Bhd has partnered with innovation platform Kolaxus to launch the Sime Darby Property University Hackathon 2026, aimed at developing ideas for more sustainable and liveable townships.

In a statement, the property developer said the nationwide programme, which runs from September to December, is expected to attract more than 1,000 students from public and private universities across Malaysia.

Participants will work on real-world sustainability challenges with guidance from industry experts and mentors. Their ideas should incorporate technology, data or artificial intelligence to deliver practical solutions with the potential to be scaled.

The hackathon will focus on two areas: People and Planet.

Under the People theme, participants will explore ways to improve residents’ health, wellbeing and safety, while strengthening community connections. The Planet theme will focus on environmental regeneration and making sustainable practices easier for residents, communities and businesses.

The competition offers RM14,000 in total prizes. The champion will receive RM6,000, while the first and second runners-up will take home RM3,000 and RM1,500, respectively. Teams placed fourth to 10th will each receive RM500.

Selected winners may also be considered for Sime Darby Property’s internship programmes, allowing them to gain industry experience and further develop their ideas with the group’s teams and mentors.

The hackathon’s grand finale will take place on Nov 14., 2026. The top five teams will then present their ideas at Sime Darby Property’s Innovation Day in December, when the winners will be announced.

Selected proposals may be explored further and potentially developed into proof-of-concept projects after the competition.

Sime Darby Property said the programme would provide young people with a platform to contribute fresh perspectives to township challenges while creating opportunities for promising talent and ideas to progress beyond the competition.
