TNB deeply committed to energy sovereignty, says managing director

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is deeply committed to energy sovereignty by strengthening resilience, safeguarding energy security and accelerating sustainable growth.

TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) managing director Datuk Shahrir Abdul Latif said energy sovereignty was no longer defined by self-sufficiency, but by the ability to build resilient, adaptable and future-ready energy systems.

Energy sovereignty, which means having direct control over a country’s energy resources, is shaping the next chapter of the energy transition, he said during a presentation at the recent Asia ESG Summit 2026.

Anchored by the energy trilemma of security, affordability and sustainability, Shahrir said these interconnected responsibilities must guide every investment, policy and technology decision to ensure a resilient and reliable energy future.

He said in supporting this vision, TNB, which is driving Malaysia’s sustainable energy journey, continues to enable a responsible transition towards a lower-carbon future through clear strategic priorities, Bernama reported.

These include progressing towards Net-Zero 2050, ending investments in new greenfield coal-fired power plants and transforming brown assets into cleaner energy solutions.

They also include advancing low-carbon technologies such as biomass, ammonia, hydrogen co-firing and carbon capture. He reaffirmed that the energy transition will be powered by strong operations and good governance.
