The high-altitude variant of China's C919 completed its maiden test flight on Wednesday, advancing the homegrown narrowbody program from a single standard aircraft toward a broader product family and positioning it to fill an emerging supply gap on the country's plateau routes, industry experts said.
The first aircraft flew for one hour and 59 minutes from Shanghai Pudong International Airport and completed all scheduled in-air test tasks before landing back in Shanghai, said Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC), the carrier's maker.
"The flight is a landmark in the C919's transition from a single baseline model to a complete aircraft family," said Zhu Keli, founding director of the China Institute of New Economy.
The development demonstrates the potential to adapt the basic C919 platform for different operating environments and passenger capacities, allowing COMAC to eventually offer airlines a family of aircraft rather than a one-size-fits-all product, Zhu said.
The new variant uses a shortened fuselage and incorporates modifications to aircraft systems for operations in the thinner air and more demanding takeoff and landing conditions typical of high elevations. It will seat 140 to 160 passengers and is designed to operate at all of China's high-altitude airports. Chinese civil aviation rules classify airports at elevations of 2,438 meters or above as high-altitude airports.
Zhu noted that adapting integrated systems to these demanding environments provides vital engineering and certification experience for future C919 derivatives, such as cargo, business jets or longer-range versions. This common-platform strategy could enhance the C919's commercial appeal by allowing airlines to share parts, maintenance facilities and training systems across variants while spreading development costs.
The high-altitude C919 would also complement COMAC's smaller C909 regional jet.
"The C909 is a regional aircraft, while the C919 is a trunk-route aircraft," said Guo Jia, a civil aviation expert and professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies' South China Business College. "Together, they provide high-altitude operating capability across different seating categories."
The immediate market opportunity is in western regions of China — including the Xizang and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions, and the provinces of Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan — where terrain requires specialised high-altitude configurations.
Plateau routes have long relied heavily on Airbus A319 aircraft and Boeing 737-700 high-gross-weight variants. Many of those aircraft are ageing, while comparable new models are not being produced in large numbers, analysts said.
"The market is entering a rare period of limited new-aircraft supply," said Yang Hangjun, a professor at the University of International Business and Economics, and president of the China Chapter of the Air Transport Research Society.
Rather than immediately replacing aircraft already in service, the C919 variant could initially meet incremental demand and gradually take over as older foreign-built jets retire, Yang said.
Wu Jie, a product manager at Chinese aviation data provider VariFlight, said the variant's market entry aligns with an expected replacement window between 2028 and 2030, ensuring a homegrown alternative is ready before a capacity gap emerges.
COMAC already has a customer for the variant. Xizang Airlines finalised an order for 40 high-altitude C919s in 2024 after agreeing to participate in the variant's development. The airline also ordered 10 high-altitude C909 regional jets.
The order gives COMAC an airline partner with extensive plateau-operating experience and a potential base from which to build maintenance, training and spare parts support.
Guo said the aircraft could help airlines make greater use of underutilised airport infrastructure in central and western China, and improve connectivity between plateau regions and the country's major economic centres.
Yang estimates that about 60 airports worldwide fall into the high-altitude category, with roughly 25 of them in China. While the concentration makes the domestic market the strongest near-term business case, Yang said the variant could eventually serve mountainous markets in Central Asia, South Asia and parts of Southeast Asia.
Yang said COMAC's experience in one of the world's largest and most complex high-altitude airport networks could eventually support the export of aircraft, operating standards, training and airport-related services. - China Daily/ANN
