UOA Group co-founder Kong Chong Soon passes away


PETALING JAYA: UOA Development Bhd has announced that its managing director Kong Chong Soon @ Chi Suim, has passed away.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the property company said Kong, 85, was appointed a director and managing director of the company on May 27, 2004.

“He was responsible for the overall group management, strategic development and growth of the group. He was the co-founder of UOA Group, and had served the company with exceptional distinction and integrity with his steadfast leadership and guidance.

“With his contribution, the company has seen growth, governance and long-term success.”

UOA Development said Kong’s previous experiences included his 42 years of experience in the construction and property development industries, both in Malaysia and Singapore.

“He played a key role as project advisor to the Harapan group of companies where he was instrumental in overseeing the successful construction of three internationally-rated hotels in Singapore, namely Hotel Meridien, Glass Hotel and Changi Meridien Hotel, valued in excess of S$866mil, during the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1987, UOA Development said Kong co-founded parent group United Overseas Australia Ltd and spearheaded its rapid growth in Malaysia.

“Over the last three decades, our parent group together with other group members have successfully completed numerous residential, industrial and commercial developments in various parts of Kuala Lumpur.

“He has in the past served in various capacities in several public-listed companies both in Malaysia and Singapore which included Raleigh Bhd, Town and City Properties Ltd and Tuan Sing Holdings Ltd.”
