Thai PM gathers tycoons for talks

BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister (PM) Anutin Charnvirakul hosted some of the country’s top billionaires and industry titans for a rare discussion on the economy, which officials have said is facing “a wave of crises” triggered by the Middle East conflict.

Gulf Development Pcl chief executive officer Sarath Ratanavadi, Charoen Pokphand group senior chairman Dhanin Chearavanont, and members of the Chirathivat family that controls retailer Central Group were among those who attended the meeting at the Government House last Friday evening.

Leaders from industries including agribusiness, electronics, banking and automotive were also present and in opening remarks ahead of the meeting, Anutin said he would be encouraging them to frankly share their concerns and suggestions for the future.

He also said the high-profile gathering - the first such event since his Bhumjaithai Party won the general election in February – would focus on investment, competitiveness, employment and long-term growth strategies as Thailand looks to bolster confidence among executives and accelerate economic momentum.

“When you succeed, Thailand succeeds,” Anutin said, adding that he will welcome further discussion at a dinner party to follow. “Everyone wins. That’s the objective of today.” — Bloomberg
