Matrade aims to boost Malaysia-Uzbekistan trade, taps Central Asia as strategic gateway

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (MATRADE) is stepping up efforts to strengthen bilateral trade between Malaysia and Uzbekistan, positioning the Central Asian nation as a strategic gateway to the broader regional market.

MATRADE deputy chief executive officer S Jai Shankar said high-level engagements between both countries have established a solid foundation for deeper economic cooperation.

He noted that bilateral trade has demonstrated encouraging growth momentum, rising by 26.4 per cent in 2025 to about US$100 million (US$1=RM4.01), up from US$80 million recorded in 2024.

"These are some trade numbers that will be interesting for you.

"Currently, growth has been good, but is it good enough? That is the question we are raising today. We are here to explore new opportunities to further expand trade,” he said at the Uzbekistan-Malaysia Business and Tourism Cooperation Forum here today.

Jai Shankar added that Malaysia’s exports to Uzbekistan have also strengthened, increasing 27 per cent to US$109 million, underscoring growing demand and market potential.

Furthermore, he described Uzbekistan as a key partner for Malaysia in accessing the broader Central Asian region.

"We see Uzbekistan as one of our key leading partners in terms of accessing the Central Asian market given the various devlopments that are currently underway. Evolving geopolitical dynamics have also heightened the need for stronger bilateral ties,” he said.

Hence, he encouraged Malaysian businesses to explore opportunities in Uzbekistan, not only as a standalone market but as a springboard into neighbouring economies.

"If you are prepared to do trade today, not only with Uzbekistan, but around the region and so on, re-look at your relationship with Uzbekistan and of course Samarkand,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Karomidin Gadoev said Malaysian business presence in Uzbekistan is growing steadily.

"Currently 47 companies with Malaysian investments are operating in Uzbekistan, compared with nearly 30 just two years ago,” he said.

Gadoev said the country is now focusing on tourism cooperation, particularly in Umrah Plus packages as a key area of collaboration, involving players such as Lembaga Tabung Haji and AirAsia X Bhd.

"The embassy stands ready to support Malaysian tour operators, especially in promoting travel to Samarkand as a key historical destination along the ancient Silk Road,” he added. - Bernama
