Gas Malaysia names Azli Mohamed as president, group CEO-elect ahead of April transition

PETALING JAYA: Gas Malaysia Bhd has appointed Azli Mohamed as its president and group chief executive officer-elect (PGCEO-elect) effective March 9, ahead of a planned leadership transition that will see him assume the top role on April 1, 2026.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, the gas provider said the PGCEO-elect designation reflects a structured and orderly leadership transition before Azli formally takes on the role of president and group chief executive officer.

50-year old Azli brings with him over two decades of senior leadership experience across the energy, aviation, and industrial sectors. He most recently served as managing director of Siemens Energy Malaysia.

Prior to this, Azli held several senior leadership roles in multinational and public-listed companies, including chief ventures and sustainability officer at Aeon Co (M) Bhd, chief transformation officer at Capital A Bhd (formerly AirAsia Group Bhd), chief strategy officer at Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, and chief operating officer at General Electric Malaysia.

Beyond his corporate career, Azli currently sits on the National Advisory Council for the United Nations Global Compact Network (UNGC) Malaysia & Brunei. He was previously an advisor to regional fund Openspace Capital and a board member of Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC).

Across these organisations, he has led large-scale transformation and growth programmes, strengthening commercial performance and operational discipline in highly regulated and competitive environments.

“These capabilities will support Gas Malaysia as we advance into the next phase of GM32, focused on disciplined execution, monetisation, and sustainable growth,” Gas Malaysia said.

Azli holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) from Universiti Utara Malaysia, completed the Leadership Finance Programme at INSEAD, and earned a Euro-ASEAN MBA from KEDGE Business School.

The GM32 strategy, a 10-year strategic plan unveiled last year, is focused on reinforcing Gas Malaysia’s core business, exploring new opportunities along the gas value chain and diversifying into cleaner energy solutions.

Industry observers said Azli’s appointment comes as the energy sector evolves, with his experience in organisational transformation potentially supporting the group in its next growth phase.
