GEORGE TOWN: Eastern & Oriental Bhd (E&O) today officially unveiled the Andaman Gurney Bridge, marking a significant new gateway to Andaman Island and reinforcing the developer’s commitment to sustainable placemaking along Penang’s northern seafront.

E&O executive chairman Datuk Seri Tee Eng Ho said that constructed as a landmark structure, the eight-lane Andaman Gurney Bridge features a four-metre pedestrian walkway on both sides, offering a seamless connection between Gurney Bay’s public realm and Andaman Island.

He said the 1.2-kilometre bridge promotes car-lite mobility and waterfront leisure, enhancing accessibility for both residents and visitors.

"Serving as the main access point to Andaman Island, the Andaman Gurney Bridge supports E&O’s master-planned development shaped around the principles of a 15-minute city, where workplaces, education, hospitality and recreation are all reachable within a short walk or cycle.

"The opening of the bridge will significantly improve travel efficiency, reducing journey time between Andaman Island and Gurney Drive from 20 minutes to about five minutes," he told reporters after officiating the Andaman Gurney Bridge here today.

The Andaman Gurney Bridge was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow together with Tee and members of E&O's senior management team.

Meanwhile, E&O managing director Kok Tuck Cheong said this marks the second bridge connecting Andaman Island, following the completion of the first Andaman Bridge in 2022.

He expressed confidence in the continued strength of the Andaman Island development, noting the successful sell-out of its maiden launches, The Meg and Arica, which have laid the foundation for the island’s growing residential community.

He said momentum has continued with The Lume, a resort-style condominium surrounded by greenery and leisure amenities.

"As Andaman Island continues to take shape, each precinct strengthens E&O’s vision of a 15-minute city with integrated homes, workplaces, education, hospitality, retail and recreation,” he added.

Chow described the Andaman development as one of the most ambitious township projects in the region, noting that the new bridge connects the familiar Gurney Drive to a thriving new community on Andaman Island.

"This may look like just a bridge, but for Penang it represents something much bigger - a step forward in connectivity, good planning, and future-building together," he said.

He also reflected on the long evolution of the Andaman development and the extensive planning behind Penang’s northern growth corridor. - Bernama
