Since then, similar installations have popped up in shopping complexes and airports. While a single pedestrian’s step may only churn out a measly few milliwatts, when multiplied by tens of thousands of people, it becomes a tangible force.

In one test, a 25 sq m (269.1 sq ft) installation at a Tokyo concourse generated enough juice to run LED displays and information panels, all powered by the hustle and bustle of everyday commuters.

While Japan’s foray into kinetic flooring is in no way poised to replace conventional power grids, it showcases how even small innovations can boost energy efficiency in high-traffic areas. In a world where every little bit counts, it turns out that this would be supplementary to a greener future.

Why Japan embraced the idea

Japan’s success with this technology is largely attributed to its urban density and sustainability culture.

In cities like Tokyo, Shinjuku and Osaka, millions of commuters navigate public transport systems daily. This sheer volume creates the perfect environment for micro-energy systems to thrive.

However, scaling up such a system does come with its own challenges. The technology is still on the pricier side to instal, and the return in energy terms is relatively modest.

Most piezoelectric tiles currently generate only a few watts per sq m under heavy use, making them best suited for powering low-energy systems like LED lights, sensors or small electronics. Entire buildings might be out of the question entirely.

Maintenance in Malaysia’s hot and humid climate could also pose a problem. The tiles would need to be waterproof, non-slip and durable enough.

Integrating them into existing flooring at stations or malls might require significant adjustments, but the potential for a greener future could make it well worth the effort.

That said, with Malaysia’s push toward smart cities and green buildings evident, it could make the idea more feasible in the future. The Green Building Index already encourages renewable and low-carbon technologies, while developments like TRX are experimenting with smarter urban infrastructure.

Globally, researchers continue to refine kinetic energy harvesting technologies. Newer generations of piezoelectric materials are becoming more efficient and hybrid systems are emerging.

There is news of combining footstep energy with solar or thermal generation to improve output. As costs fall and materials improve, the technology may shift from novelty to practicality.

Malaysia might not be ready to line its sidewalks with power- generating tiles just yet but as cities become smarter and denser, the idea grows less far-fetched.

After all, the nation is already investing in renewable energy, public transport and urban sustainability frameworks.

Adding micro-energy innovations like this could complement those efforts in subtle but meaningful ways.

For now, Japan’s piezoelectric tiles remain a fascinating showcase of how creativity can meet sustainability in the urban landscape.

They prove that renewable energy does not always have to come from vast wind farms or rooftop solar panels. Sometimes it can come from something as simple as walking to work.
