Edotco and CelcomDigi sign series of MoUs at Barcelona event to boost 5G expansion

KUALA LUMPUR: EDOTCO Malaysia has accelerated its 5G expansion and advanced its next-generation telecommunication infrastructure across Malaysia with the signing of a series of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.

In a statement today, the integrated telecommunications infrastructure services company said it has signed MOUs with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), U Mobile, CelcomDigi Bhd and Avealto.

EDOTCO group chief executive officer (CEO) Adlan Tajudin said the various collaborations will accelerate the deployment of next-generation 5G services and ensure that connectivity is inclusive, sustainable and future-proof by partnering industry leaders.

"As the national digital infrastructure partner, we are committed to leveraging our expertise, innovation and strategic partnerships to create transformative opportunities for businesses and consumers nationwide.

"These partnerships mark a defining moment in Malaysia’s digital transformative journey towards a connected, resilient future for all,” he said.

EDOTCO said it is spearheading efforts to establish Langkawi as Malaysia’s first 5G-enabled digital tourism hub with DNB, which will enhance visitor experiences, improve the island’s smart tourism infrastructure, and position it as a model for future 5G-powered destinations.

"Additionally, EDOTCO will be one of the first not-for-profit organisations to be recognised as an official and preferred 5G in-building coverage infrastructure partner for U Mobile’s 5G network rollout,” the statement said.

EDOTCO’s partnership with CelcomDigi will enhance digital inclusion and sustainability -  two key initiatives - while its collaboration with Avealto represents a bold step in exploring high-altitude connectivity solutions via a proof of concept (PoC) trial,” it said.

Meanwhile, also at MWC 2025 in Barcelona, CelcomDigi and Ericsson Malaysia Sdn Bhd signed an MOU to accelerate 5G adoption in Malaysia’s oil and gas (O&G) industry, advancing the key sector to the forefront of industrial digitalisation.

A joint statement said combining CelcomDigi’s robust network infrastructure and deep local expertise with Ericsson’s global leadership in 5G technology will drive the creation of 5G-powered solutions tailored to the sector’s unique demands.

CelcomDigi deputy CEO Albern Murty said the partnership allows it to co-create meaningful solutions that go beyond technology, directly addressing industry challenges and transforming operations.

"We look forward to shaping a safer, more efficient, and future-ready O&G sector, as well as accelerating 5G adoption across industries,” he said.

David Hagerbro, president and CEO of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh said the partnership is a leap forward in Malaysia’s digital transformation.

"Our partnership will drive real-time solutions in terms of enhanced efficiency and safety; digitalising operations will redefine how industries operate in the country,” he added.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission member Datuk Seri Chee Hong Leong witnessed the MOU signings. - Bernama
