CIDB, Petronas to drive oil and gas construction excellence

The Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) has partnered with Petronas to drive construction excellence in the oil and gas (O and G) sector.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) has partnered with Petronas to drive construction excellence in the oil and gas (O and G) sector through the Construction Industry Transformation Programme 2016-2020 (CITP).

CIDB Chief Executive Datuk Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid said the collaboration would focus on five key areas, namely corporate agreement, procurement best practices, technology development, material and quality assurance, as well as contractor and construction personnel development.

“We see Petronas, a world-renowned Malaysian company, as a valuable partner in the journey towards transforming the Malaysian construction industry into one that is more productive and competitive on the world stage,” he said at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CIDB and Petronas here on Friday.

He believed the collaboration would enhance and increase adoption of modern technologies and practices in the O and G construction sector.

“These include the Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement, Industrialised Building System, Building Information Modelling, as well as the Malaysian Carbon Reduction and Environmental Sustainability Tool,” he said.

Ahmad Asri hoped the partnership would enable Petronas to impose its stringent safety standard on other construction companies.

“If all construction companies can adopt Petronas' safety requirement, I believe we will reduce the risk to (be at par with) the United Kingdom's safety standard,” he added.

The partnership would also look into areas such as integrity in construction projects, quality and certification of building materials, training for Bumiputera O and G contractors, as well as accreditation and certification of skilled construction workers. - Bernama
