Myanmar President nominates Lt-Gen Yar Pyae for Defence Minister post

YANGON: The President has submitted the name of Lieutenant-General Yar Pyae (pic) to the Speaker of the Union Parliament for appointment as Union Minister for Defence, Union Parliament Speaker Aung Lin Dwe announced at a parliamentary session held Monday (Oct 12).

According to a letter sent by the President to the Speaker on October 10, the two nominees for Union ministerial posts are Lieutenant-General Yar Pyae for the Ministry of Defence and Dr Ko Ko Lwin for the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

Parliamentary discussions on whether to approve the appointments or raise objections on the grounds that the nominees do not meet the required qualifications will be held at the fifth day of the Union Parliament session.

The Ministry of Defence is currently headed by General Tun Aung, a former Commander-in-Chief (Air). The President has now submitted Lieutenant-General Yar Pyae’s name to Parliament for appointment to replace him.

Similarly, Dr Ko Ko Lwin has been nominated to replace Dr Soe Win as Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. Dr Soe Win has since been reassigned as Union Minister for Health.

Lieutenant-General Yar Pyae currently serves as Chairman of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC). During the government’s term from 2021 to 2026, he also held several senior positions, including National Security Adviser, Union Minister at the Union Government Office, Union Minister for Home Affairs, Union Minister for Border Affairs and Union Minister for Ethnic Affairs. - Eleven Media/ANN
