KUCHING: Sarawak is positioning Miri as a strategic gas hub under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap.
State Deputy International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister Datuk Malcolm Mussen told the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (Oct 13) that the infrastructure aims to secure reliable power and energy supplies.
Developing the Miri Hub through state-owned Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), the initiative will integrate upstream gas production, receiving facilities, small-scale LNG operations, and a 500MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant.
"These facilities will provide the gas supply, reliable power and supporting infrastructure required to attract new industries and investment," he told Adam Yii (GPS-Pujut) during Question Time.
He also said the RM2.5bil Miri CCGT project stood at 63% completion as of the third quarter of 2026, with commercial operations expected to commence by the end of next year.
"Once operational, the plant is expected to utilise approximately 75 to 80 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day," he said.
Malcolm also said Sarawak is engaging with the Federal Government on an incentive package for qualifying investments under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap.
He said the proposed incentives would complement existing federal incentives to support investments in gas and energy.
