NAGOYA: Watoru, a six-year-old female koala at a zoo in Nagoya, has passed away. Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, located in the city’s Chikusa Ward, announced the news on Friday. Watoru was known for her gentle nature and was popular with visitors.

Watoru had been observed limping since Sept. 29, and two days later she nearly fell from her perch, prompting her to be moved into a separate enclosure out of public view so she could receive care.

Although she was receiving treatment, Watoru passed away on Thursday (Oct 8) evening. She is thought to have died of malignant lymphoma.

A floral tribute stand for Watoru will be set up until Oct 25. - The Japan News/ANN
