HONG KONG: Chief Executive John Lee and his team will wear green-patterned ties and silk scarves, along with blue badges, as he delivers Hong Kong’s first-ever five-year plan together with his fifth Policy Address on Wednesday (Sept 16).
In a Facebook post, Lee said the accessories — created by faculty and students of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) — carry deep symbolic meaning tied to the city’s development vision.
The ties and scarves take inspiration from the technological development of the Northern Metropolis, Hong Kong’s ambitious new development project.
The interwoven patterns on the ties represent both internal connectivity and external links, promoting deep synergy among talent, education, and industry.
The blue badge features the Chinese characters “one” and “five”, representing the five-year plan.
Its design incorporates two overlapping squares, symbolising Hong Kong’s ability to pool resources and diverse talent from all sectors of society to deepen high-quality development and strengthen the city’s economic competitiveness on the international stage.
Hong Kong’s first five-year plan is devised to proactively align with the national 15th Five-Year Plan, marking a historic shift for Hong Kong as it formulates its own medium-term development strategy.
Lee has emphasized that the plan and Policy Address are closely linked, with the government incorporating public views gathered through extensive consultation processes.
During the consultation period, authorities used artificial intelligence to analyze approximately 17,000 submissions from the public, demonstrating a data-driven approach to policy formulation.
Lee expressed appreciation for the creativity shown by THEi’s faculty and students, noting that the accessory designs share a coherent theme. Together, they symbolise Hong Kong leveraging its unique advantage of “backing onto the motherland while connecting with the world” to shine on the international stage.
“I look forward to carrying their expectations for Hong Kong’s first five-year plan and preparing for a prosperous new chapter,” Lee said in the post.
The garments were designed for the second consecutive year by THEi for the Policy Address team, continuing a tradition of incorporating local academic talent into official presentations. - China Daily/ANN
