Chinese man, 106, embraces ‘reverse schedule’, celebrated alongside wife as ‘model couple’

A 106-year-old man in eastern China has inspired many online with his unconventional lifestyle and enduring marriage.

Wang Dinggao, from Rui’an in Zhejiang province, remains remarkably independent despite experiencing some hearing loss, according to the mainland media outlet Daxiang News.

In contrast to most people, he adheres to a “reverse schedule”: sleeping around 4 or 5pm, waking at 1am, enjoying breakfast at 3am before embarking on his morning walk.

His son has adapted to this unusual routine, rising early each day to prepare breakfast, while the family continues to honour Wang’s long-established habits.

Additionally, Wang maintains a high level of independence, managing his own laundry, bathing, and even skilled sewing tasks.

His diet is simple and unrestricted; he enjoys seafood, particularly river crabs, and occasionally shares a meal along with a glass of baijiu (Chinese liquor) with his son.

When asked about his longevity, Wang attributes it to a positive mindset, strong family traditions, and a lifelong passion for work and learning.

Although he received only four years of formal education, Wang’s curiosity and perseverance enabled him to acquire knowledge and skills that far exceeded his schooling. He was appointed village cashier at a young age.

Beyond his official duties, he learned by observing fellow villagers and eventually mastered cooking, bamboo weaving, and rice sculpture.

Wang and his wife, Hong Ailan, shared an extraordinary 80 years of marriage and raised a son, with their family now spanning four generations.

To their neighbours, they were regarded as the village’s “model couple.” When conflicts arose between families, residents frequently sought their guidance in resolving disputes.

Their son revealed a contrast in their personalities: his mother was quick-tempered, while his father was calm and gentle.

When his wife became upset, Wang never argued. Instead, he would quietly offer her a cup of warm water and say with a smile: “Have some water first, then you can continue being angry.” This simple gesture often diffused the tension.

After Hong’s death, Wang became withdrawn and struggled physically, but he gradually regained his strength with his son’s support. The date of her passing has not been publicly disclosed.

Though his wife is gone, her presence lingers in their home, from the cherished photographs Wang treasures to the handmade handrail she left behind.

One online commenter suggested that “a happy marriage and a kind, tolerant nature” may be among the secrets behind Wang’s longevity.

Another remarked: “My father is 86 and stays up late watching short videos every day. Maybe I should start respecting his habits.”

China’s seventh national population census in 2020 recorded 119,000 centenarians, making the country home to the world’s largest population of individuals aged 100 and above. -- SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
