JAKARTA (Bernama): A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Banda Sea in eastern Indonesia on Friday evening, with tremors felt across parts of Maluku.
Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Earthquake and Tsunami Director Wijayanto said the quake occurred at 6.56 pm local time at a depth of 148 kilometres, with its epicentre located 162 kilometres northeast of Southwest Maluku.
"Tsunami modelling results showed that the earthquake had no tsunami potential,” he said in a statement.
Wijayanto said the earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth and was caused by subduction activity in the Banda Sea, with the movement occurring along a thrust fault.
He said strong tremors were felt in Amahai in Central Maluku, as well as Damer and the Babar Islands in Southwest Maluku, while weaker tremors were reported in Saumlaki and Tiakur.
Wijayanto said no aftershocks had been recorded as of 7.15 pm, adding that BMKG would continue monitoring seismic activity and provide updates to the public.
He advised residents to remain calm, avoid unverified information and stay away from buildings damaged by the earthquake. -- Bernama
