BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Brunei Darussalam ranked among the top three Asean countries in Mathematics and Science and second in Reading in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025, with 5,740 students from 55 secondary schools participating in the assessment.
The results, released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris Monday (Sept 7), ranked Brunei 42nd globally in Mathematics, 46th in Science and 41st in Reading.
More than 760,000 students from 91 countries and economies took part in PISA 2025, making it the largest PISA participation to date.
This was announced by Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati Tajuddin during a press conference at the ministry’s Conference Hall I on Tuesday.
PISA is a widely recognised comparative international large-scale assessment conducted every three years organised by the OECD.
In computational problem solving, Brunei Darussalam scores 496, four points below the OECD average, which is 500, which has placed Brunei Darussalam 32nd globally.
“Additionally, in this cycle, the OECD has analysed students’ engagement in schools. For Brunei Darussalam, our students are reported as highly engaged learners with a positive attitude to learning. This has placed Brunei Darussalam 23rd among the 91 participating countries.”
She further shared that this is the third time Brunei Darussalam has participated in PISA, following its inaugural participation in 2018.
By comparing results internationally and studying trend comparisons across three cycles, policymakers and educators in the country can learn from other countries’ policies and practices and the MoE will continue to analyse these data and work towards supporting all our efforts in providing quality education for all. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
