Vietnam govt orders probe into Vietnam Airlines incident at Munich Airport

HANOI (dpa): Vietnam's Ministry of Construction has ordered the country's aviation regulator and national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines to urgently coordinate with German authorities investigating an incident involving a Boeing 787-9 at Munich Airport, reported German news agency dpa quoting state media on Tuesday.

The ministry instructed the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) to establish an official communication channel with German authorities responsible for investigating aircraft accidents and incidents and to participate in the investigation in accordance with international rules.

CAAV was also ordered to strengthen safety oversight of aviation personnel training, aircraft operations and maintenance by Vietnamese airlines.

The regulator must provide timely and objective information about the incident and prevent unverified reports from causing public concern. It is also required to report the findings of the German investigation and subsequent corrective and preventive measures to the ministry.

Vietnam Airlines was instructed to cooperate closely with German authorities, the aircraft and engine manufacturers and other relevant parties involved in the investigation.

The airline must also review its procedures for personnel training, aircraft operations and maintenance, and fulfil its obligations to affected passengers, the ministry said.

The measures follow an incident involving Vietnam Airlines flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi on August 15.

According to preliminary information from CAAV, the Boeing 787-9, registered as VN-A867, issued warnings shortly after take-off indicating a possible tail strike and abnormal tyre pressure. The crew alerted air traffic control and returned to Munich for a technical inspection.

The aircraft remained in the Munich area for about two hours before landing. All 271 passengers and 16 crew members were safe, and no injuries were reported. - dpa
