Japan’s Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival illuminates summer night sky

NAGANO: The 78th edition of the Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival was held on Saturday night in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture. Spectators along Lake Suwa’s shore were able to enjoy spectacular and dynamic fireworks that lit up the night sky.

The celebration, one of Japan’s foremost fireworks events, was first organised in 1949 to commemorate war victims and pray for postwar reconstruction.

Consisting of 24 elaborately choreographed sets, the festival captivated the audience over the course of two hours.

The show is characterised by “star mine” displays — a type of rapid-fire fireworks — and “musical star mine” performances, which feature fireworks synchronised to loud music.

Since last year, musical star mine displays have been incorporated into a competitive segment performed by fireworks companies, held during the first half of the festival. - Japan News/ANN
