PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodia has officially launched the Phnom Penh Tourism Development Plan (2026-2030), a five-year strategic initiative aimed at transforming the capital into a premier urban tourism destination in South-East Asia.
The blueprint was jointly unveiled by Tourism Minister Huot Hak and Phnom Penh Municipal Governor Khuong Sreng at an event attended by approximately 300 stakeholders from across the tourism sector.
Speaking at the launch, Hak said Phnom Penh is expanding its footprint beyond its traditional role as Cambodia's political, economic, and cultural center. The capital is rapidly strengthening its position as an international gateway and a vibrant urban hub that blends history, civilization, modern lifestyles, and unique city experiences.
The plan is not merely a strategic guidance document, but also a shared roadmap and practical framework to mobilize stakeholders to jointly develop Phnom Penh's tourism sector, he said.
Highlighting the city's unique identity and rich cultural assets, Hak pointed to the recently developed Chaktomuk Walk Street as a prime example of a successful, modern tourism product that continues to attract large numbers of visitors.
He added that the country must continue to innovate by creating new tourism products, upgrading service quality, enhancing destination appeal, and reinforcing visitor safety and security.
Meanwhile, Governor Khuong Sreng said that to further elevate the city's appeal, local authorities plan to develop new public parks capable of hosting major national and international sporting and tourism events.
Additionally, the city will introduce dedicated public transit lanes to ease traffic congestion, alongside new cycling lanes and a public electric bicycle sharing system to improve mobility for both tourists and daily commuters, he added. -- Xinhua
