YANGON: A four-engined Antonov AN-12 turboprop transport aircraft operated by Ukraine International Airlines made an emergency landing at Yangon International Airport on Oct 11 following a mechanical failure, according to aviation sources.
The aircraft was flying from New Delhi International Airport in India to U-Tapao International Airport in Thailand when it was forced to divert to Yangon.
The Antonov’s fourth engine reportedly failed, prompting the pilot to request permission from the Yangon airport control tower to make an emergency landing.
Air traffic controllers approved the request, and engineers from the airline were sent to Yangon to repair the engine.
“The transport aircraft made an emergency landing at Yangon International Airport at 3.30pm and is now parked at the airport,” Department of Civil Aviation deputy director-general Ye Htut Aung said.
In a separate incident on Feb 28, a United States cargo plane made an emergency landing at Yangon International Airport after a fire alarm was triggered in a container carrying 175.7 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries.
The aircraft, operated by United Parcel Service Co Ltd, was travelling from Hong Kong International Airport to Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.
On April 24, an Oman Air passenger plane also made an emergency landing at Yangon International Airport after a female passenger from the Philippines became ill.
