Two dead after house collapses in heavy rains near Tokyo

TOKYO: (Bernama-Kyodo) A man and a woman found at the scene of a house collapse caused by heavy rain near Tokyo have been confirmed dead, Kyodo News reported, citing the local city on Sunday (July 19).

The two-storey house in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, collapsed after mud from a mountain behind the house flowed into the first floor as torrential rain lashed parts of the prefecture on Friday night.

The bodies of the woman and the man were found on Saturday afternoon and Sunday night, respectively.

Local fire and rescue authorities had been unable to contact the residents of the house, a couple in their 60s.

The landslide occurred after Ashikaga recorded unprecedented rainfall, with a record 232.5 millimetres falling in the 12 hours to 2.20 am on Saturday. - Bernama-Kyodo
