KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has applied to the High Court for a stay of execution on his 15-year prison sentence and RM11.38biln fine in the RM2.28bil 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MBD) corruption case.
Defense counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah informed High Court Judge Justice Noor Ruwena Md Nordin during case management here on Friday (Sept 25), adding that a certificate of urgency has been filed regarding the matter.
The former prime minister was convicted on Dec 25 last year by presiding judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah—who has since been elevated to the Federal Court—who ordered the 15-year jail term to run consecutively after Najib completes his sentence in the RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P. Kunyalam told the court the prosecution intends to file an affidavit in response to the application.
Justice Noor Ruwena then fixed Oct 14 for the hearing of the application.
"Written submissions, if you wish to submit, must be sent in before Oct 13," she told the parties.
Najib's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, was seen arriving at court at 10:30am.
