Five foreigners jailed for overstaying in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Five foreign nationals have been convicted in separate cases under the Immigration Act, Chapter 17, for overstaying in Brunei Darussalam after their immigration passes had expired, the Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) said.

The convictions were handed down under Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act.

Abu Bakar, a 31-year-old Bangladeshi man, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane. His sentence took effect on April 23, 2026.

Billal, a 44-year-old Bangladeshi man, also pleaded guilty and received a sentence of six months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane, effective May 5, 2026.

Litas Kunu Ilaiha, a 32-year-old Indonesian woman, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment and fined BND1,000 in lieu of caning. Failure to pay the fine will result in the prison term being extended to six months. The sentence took effect on May 26, 2026.

Abadul Islam, a 38-year-old Bangladeshi man, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane, effective July 2, 2026.

Deni Dwi Saputra, a 25-year-old Indonesian man, also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane. His sentence also took effect on July 2, 2026.
