Laos records over 2.1 million foreign tourist arrivals in 1st five months 2026

VIENTIANE: Laos welcomed more than 2.1 million international visitors in the first five months of 2026, achieving 47 per cent of the annual target of 4.46 million arrivals and representing an eight per cent increase year-on-year.

According to Lao News Agency on Tuesday, the report was presented during the ongoing first extraordinary session of the Lao National Assembly's 10th legislature, stating that tourism revenue surpassed US$960 million during the period.

Domestic tourism also showed strong performance, with 1.3 million domestic trips recorded, reaching 30 per cent of the annual target of 4.3 million trips set by the National Assembly.

The report highlighted progress in tourism infrastructure development and destination management.

The government has also stepped up efforts to improve tourism service standards and protect visitors.

Laos aims to attract more than 43 million visitors between 2026 and 2030, including 21 million domestic and 22 million international tourists.

In 2025, Laos welcomed over 4.5 million foreign visitors, an 11 per cent increase from the previous year and surpassing the government's target. Thailand, China, and Vietnam were the top sources of international tourists. - Xinhua
