PHNOM PENH: Nestled among lush mountains and along the banks of the idyllic Mekong River lies one of Laos' best-kept cultural treasures - a circus tradition that has survived revolution, war and decades of hardship.

As the Lao National Circus celebrated its 60th anniversary last month, it stood as a hallmark of artistic excellence and a quiet ambassador of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Lao circus has a chequered past rooted in the nation’s revolutionary history. It was established during the Indochina War in the 1960s to motivate and entertain soldiers and the public, according to Vientiane Times.

Having endured wars, political upheaval, economic hardship and natural disasters, the Lao National Circus has faithfully preserved and shared the country's rich cultural heritage with audiences at home and abroad.

"Over the last six decades, the Lao National Circus has acted as a vital cultural ambassador,” Hanoi-based Legend Travel Group Founder and Chief Executive Officer Tony Bui said.

"Unlike Western circuses that historically focussed heavily on exotic animals or massive spectacles, the Lao circus deeply weaves national folklore, traditional music, ethnic costumes and daily rural life into its acrobatics and storytelling.”

In conjunction with the anniversary, the Vientiane Times lauded the Lao National Circus, which began in the caves of Viengxay in north-eastern Laos, where the revolutionary groups were based, as a symbol of national pride.

The South-East Asian nation, with a population of about seven million people, has survived brutal wars and devastating natural calamities, from typhoons to floods.

Its economy, largely dependent on tourism, electricity exports and farm products, remains classified as a Least Developed Country, although it plans to graduate from that category by the end of 2026.

Over the decades, generations of talented travelling performers, from acrobats and jugglers to aerial performers and clowns, have entertained people in cities and rural villages.

"It has brought joy and inspiration to countless people and has become an important part of our national cultural identity.

"Amid the flames of war, our artists used their talent as a powerful weapon of encouragement and patriotism, bringing hope and strength to soldiers and the people in their struggle for national liberation,” Laos’ Information, Culture, and Tourism Minister Suanesavanh Vignaket, said at the anniversary celebration, reported the newspaper.

Throughout Laos’ turbulent history, the Lao National Circus has continued to survive despite the decline of traditional circus arts across much of the world.

"In South-East Asia, performers often view their craft not merely as a job, but as a living lineage they are responsible for protecting. During wartime or severe economic hardship, the circus served as an essential psychological escape and a source of morale for the local people.

"The artists were driven by the knowledge that their performances brought joy, hope and a sense of shared identity when the population needed it most,” said Bui.

But these traditional arts may fade away, leaving an irreplaceable cultural vacuum in countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam, where traditional performing arts have long served as a powerful platform for storytelling and cultural preservation. - Bernama
