BANGKOK: The criminal court of Thailand on Monday (June 29) sentenced a Thai woman, charged with human trafficking and other crimes, to seven years and six months in prison, after she left her then 12-year-old daughter at a massage parlour with private rooms in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, where the girl was forced to provide sexual services.

According to the ruling, the mother brought the girl to Japan last June under the guise of “going on a trip” and entered into a contract with the massage parlor’s owner to force the girl to provide sexual massages.

According to Thai police, the mother later went to Taiwan, where she was detained by Taiwan authorities in part on suspicion of offenses related to engaging in sex work herself.

She was arrested last December after being forcibly repatriated to Thailand. Despite denying the charges at the time of her arrest, she reportedly later admitted to the charges. - The Yomiuri Shimbun
